Startup 'Yellow' Aims to Change India's Relationship with Death Planning

LegalTech startup 'Yellow' secures seed funding from Gruhas | Today News

In India, discussions about death are often avoided—until a sudden loss forces families into chaos. With over ₹2 lakh crore in unclaimed financial assets lying in banks and institutions, largely belonging to the middle class, it's clear that estate planning is neglected.

Enter Yellow, a Bengaluru-based startup founded in 2021 by Niranjan Vemulkar and Nikhil Varghese. Born from the lessons of the Covid crisis, Yellow is on a mission to make estate planning simple, accessible, and affordable for the Indian middle class.

Unlike the wealthy, who often have legal advisors, middle-class families are left scrambling during emergencies. Yellow changes that with a digital platform—accessible via app and web—that allows users to create and update legally valid Wills from home, starting at ₹1,499.

Backed by the Government of India’s SAGE Fund and part of Google for Startups Accelerator 2024, Yellow offers clarity on an often misunderstood topic. It educates users that nominees are not legal heirs—only a Will legally defines asset distribution and guardianship.

With over 90% of Indians dying intestate, Yellow aims to replace confusion with preparation, making sure families aren't left navigating emotional and financial turmoil after a loved one’s passing.

Jewel Thief – A Heist Movie That Reflects More Than It Steals

Jewel Thief The Heist Begins review: Nothing worth stealing in this diamond-sized disaster - India Today

Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins, now streaming on Netflix, isn’t just another flashy Bollywood caper — it might just be a mirror held up to the industry itself, and more disturbingly, to its audience. At its core, the film raises a troubling question: How many times can Saif Ali Khan rebuild Bollywood, only to help bring it down again?

Years ago, Netflix had high hopes for Indian content. It backed Baahubali: Before the Beginning, a big-budget prequel series to Rajamouli's epic franchise. Despite heavy investment and a full cast, the first version was scrapped and reshot. Even the reboot didn’t meet Netflix’s quality bar and was shelved—surprisingly so, considering Netflix greenlit Jewel Thief and similar titles like Mrs Serial Killer and Maharaj.

This speaks volumes about Netflix’s evolving standards. Even Abbas-Mustan's Penthouse, another completed film with big names, mysteriously vanished from their lineup with no explanation—leaving fans and even cast member Cyrus Broacha baffled.

Jewel Thief, however, made the cut. And in doing so, it feels like a full-circle moment. Saif Ali Khan, who’s been through the highs and lows of Bollywood, returns once again — not just as a leading man, but as a symbol of a film industry that can’t decide whether it wants to thrive or implode.

Canadian PM: “We Must Look Out for Ourselves” Amid US Signal Leak Fallout

Syrian-Canadians hopeful as Ottawa takes initial steps, but urge more action

March 26, 2025 | 10:30 a.m. GMT+5:30

Following a major breach reported by The Atlantic, where top U.S. military strike plans on Yemen were mistakenly shared in a group chat including a journalist, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a strong response.

Carney emphasized Canada’s need to "look out for itself", signaling a shift toward increased national defense autonomy. While reaffirming Canada’s close intelligence ties with the U.S. via the Five Eyes alliance, Carney noted the importance of accountability and resilience.

“My responsibility is to plan for the worst... to be more and more Canadian in our defense capabilities,” said Carney.

The diplomatic tone reflects growing strain in Canada–U.S. relations, especially in light of recent tensions including tariff threats and provocative remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney’s remarks come as other U.S. allies begin responding to the implications of the leaked sensitive data, raising concerns about operational security within international coalitions.

Shekhar Kapur Claims Bandit Queen Edited Without Permission: ‘Are We Lesser Beings Than Western Directors?’

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has expressed his frustration over the streaming version of his critically acclaimed 1994 film Bandit Queen, claiming that it has been edited beyond recognition without his permission. The movie, which tells the story of Phoolan Devi, a feared Chambal dacoit turned Member of Parliament, was widely praised for its raw and intense portrayal of her life.

Kapur, known for his other iconic films like MasoomMr. India, and the Elizabeth series, took to social media to voice his concerns, asking whether streaming platforms would ever dare to make similar alterations to the films of renowned Western directors such as Christopher Nolan. He wrote, “The Bandit Queen on #AmazonPrime is unrecognisable from my film. Someone has cut it beyond recognition. And yet it carries my name as Director. And no one asked me! Are we lesser beings than Western Directors? Would they have the guts to cut a Chris Nolan film without his permission?”

Kapur's remarks highlight a growing issue in the film industry regarding creative control and the extent to which streaming platforms and distributors can alter a director’s work. In his post, he questions whether the same respect is afforded to directors outside the West, particularly those from India, when it comes to preserving the integrity of their films.

This controversy has sparked debates about the balance between artistic vision and commercial interests in the age of streaming platforms, and how the industry treats films from different parts of the world.
